There were a couple incidents during my treatment when family members participated in therapy sessions with me and my individual therapist. This was helpful in educating them about my disorder and what they could do to be most helpful.

I firmly believe that family should be involved in treatment no matter how old the person suffering is and should be manditory for adolescents with eating disorders.

Initially family therapy didn’t seem helpful to me as I was 100% honest about everything with my parents, however there have been many sessions where I have found out suprising yet helpful things about how my anorexia has affected my family and about their view on things. Family therapy allowed my parents and I to come up with agreements and solutions together to tackle problems.

For myself, this wasn’t helpful. As an adult, my parents could not wrap their minds around anything related to psychology. With my husband involved, he talked a good line, but never truly supported my recovery. But in many instances, I think that family therapy can be a very useful tool, if handled in a manner that is therapeutic.
